Description

Over the last decade, the City of Portland has received an influx of residents from all across the globe. While the African community and other immigrant groups have maintained a public presence, organizing to provide one another with support and encouragement, the Latino community has remained largely quiet and in the shadows. Through the Refugee and Human Rights Clinic, students began to look for ways to meet the needs of Latinos in the Portland, legal or otherwise. What came out of meetings with prominent leaders within the Latino community was the sense that above all, these individuals were especially nervous about their legal status, or lack thereof. Thus, students from the Clinic collaborated with various legal providers in Portland, including ILAP and Pierce Atwood, to put on several Know Your Rights presentations geared specifically to the Latino Community.
